An edutainment game where fun meets safety: Teaching vital disaster prevention skills to a younger audience.
Best Game Hack of Hack For Humanity 2025
Disaster Quest is a Godot game made during SCU's Hack For Humanity 2025 by SCU students Nicolas Gibson, Cole Mitchell, Erick Sun, Jayden Malhotra, Joey Hissen, and Zachary Carlson.
Hack for Humanity is an SCU-led hackathon in which teams have 24 hours to develop projects that identify and solve pressing social issues using code and creativity. After 24-hour development, publishing, and judged presentations, Disaster Quest won the 2025 category prize for "Best Game Hack".
As one of the art team leaders, Nicolas created 100+ original static and animated sprites for the game using Aseprite. In addition, Nicolas taught Aseprite to 2 team members, and delegated artistic tasks to maximize our efficiency. He communicated quickly and clearly to team members about necessary assets, requirements, and feedback on current sprites. Finally, he adapted to the group's needs and the scale of the project on the fly, and coordinated efforts across art and coding teams using GitHub.
